Ground source heat pumps

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use pipes that are buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor or warm air heating systems and hot water in your home.

A ground source heat pump circulates a mixture of water and antifreeze around a loop of pipe, called a ground loop, which is buried in your garden.

Heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid and then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump.

The ground stays at a fairly constant temperature under the surface, so the heat pump can be used throughout the year.

The length of the ground loop depends on the size of your home and the amount of heat you need.

Longer loops can draw more heat from the ground, but need more space to be buried in. If space is limited, a vertical borehole can be drilled instead.

How does a ground source heat pump work?

Heat from the ground is absorbed at low temperatures into a fluid inside a loop of pipe (a ground loop) buried underground. The fluid then passes through a compressor that raises it to a higher temperature, which can then heat water for the heating and hot water circuits of the house.

The cooled ground-loop fluid passes back into the ground where it absorbs further energy from the ground in a continuous process as long as heating is required.

If there is enough space, the collector loop can be laid horizontally in a trench about a metre or so below ground. Where there isn’t room to do this, you can drill vertical boreholes to extract heat from much further down, typically between 90m and 160m deep.

The space you need for a horizontal loop, and the depth you need for a borehole, will depend on many factors. Your heat pump installer will design the collector array based on local conditions and the heat requirements of your home.

Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, the air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally.

Possibility of September Funding?

Further to the recent declaration by the Chancellor, relative to potential support towards home energy saving measures:

1) It has not been authenticated that cooperation is accessible for new boilers.
2) The qualifying criteria for acceptance has also yet to become confirmed.
3) If, and, or when it takes place this will be in the guise of vouchers.
4) No install or work will be able to be implemented until vouchers have been obtained.
5) With some luck, it will be a yes for the program & it will flow immediately.

Whilst this is fantastic news if it happens, the downside is many unscrupulous installers will install low-priced, low quality materials, which will only suffice to “cover over” your problems on a short-term basis.
Usually they will install boilers with no protection add ons & only with 2 year service warranties. When this happens, major expense & problems are only two years away. You need to become knowledgeable about this.

Helpful Government?

Seeing as loft & cavity wall insulation have been truly hammered since the advent of ECO in 2012 (are there really a significant amount of homes still “empty”), some say it will be impossible to spend the full amount supposedly available.

To the dismay of most people struggling, new boiler assistance is apparently not included in this grant package. This is the one which would bring most benefit to folk,  & makes you wonder of the sincerity of the announcement of available funds. Only time will tell if the funding is actually used up….

New Combi Boilers in Durham

Don't read this unless you enjoy having your eyes taken out and paying over the odds for your brand-new central heating boiler on financing!
Likewise ... in the event that you love value, a proper price, a service that's as good in the first week as it is in the very last, then probably you may well choose to read on ... so ...

Not all new combi boilers are equal.....

Imagine what you require when examining the costs of a new boiler, what is essential, what is practical, what is my recommended option. Is it cost? Support service? Efficiency? Long term or short-term manufacturer's warranty? Reliability? How do I recognize this is the correct deal? There is a good deal to take into account & whatever way you go, bear this in your mind ... new combi boilers these days don't come cheap.

Not your fault, nor ours, it's the environmentally friendly practices of today. Quite simply developers must produce eco-friendly combi boilers, climate friendly along with being really economical to run, & to be honest the technology involved is tremendous, therefore they cost twice as much & a bit more, compared to a decade earlier.

Realising this do you really want some guy, possibly a sales representative coming to your house to "measure up"? Not everybody is at ease doing it in this way. If you are, then this really should take no longer than 15 mins generally, 30 mins maximum, if you want to discuss in detail your decisions or possibly chat regarding monthly boiler payments. Any more, then it's a hard sell sales pitch.

The modern-day way is to simply send images of your central heating boiler, controls, flue pipe which goes external, the pipes below your boiler, & obtain a quotation this way. I'm an engineer myself, trust me it's easy, don't allow anybody tell you otherwise.

With regard to those who basically wish to understand the expense without speaking or interacting whatsoever to anybody, feel free to go right here: https://boilersonfinance1.co.uk/quotation-app/
